This article from Wired.com explores how modified paintball guns are being used in Iraq and Afganistan to provide a non/less lethal alternative to crowd and riot control. These markers shoot at a higher PSI than traditional paintball guns and their bismuth body creates a pain that exceeds anything you might find on the field. There is even a link to a video where you will see one of the markers in use during a riot. Here is an excerpt from the article:
“Soldiers in Iraq are being issued with an unusual new weapon — a paintball gun. The weapon, known as the FN303 or Individual Serviceman Non-Lethal System (ISNLS), fires a 6.5 gram projectile containing a mixture of paint and the brittle metal bismuth. RDECOM magazine (warning, giant .PDF!) says that “the shoulder-fired weapons have been deployed to troops for non-lethal crowds and riot control during detainee operations.”
We are putting some of the finishing touches on our new forum and reviews section. In the next week or so, we will start encouraging members to help us develop these two new features and create a community of players focused on helping each other excel at the sport. Look to the paintball forums to stay connected with friends, discuss mods, seek advice, schedule a match, or to talk about anything that is on your mind.
Our new paintball reviews section will be the place to make your opinion public. We hope everyone will take the time to give honest and comprehensive feedback. This will help everyone make better and more informed decisions when purchasing their next marker or gear. We will be adding products over time, but if you don’t see your item listed, feel free to add it yourself. You’ll also find over time that we will post reviews directly from Jerry’s Paintball based on the feedback we receive from customers like you.
If you are interested in helping out with the forums, please drop us an email. We hope you’ll reach out to your friends and make it yours. As it grows, we’ll be looking to some of the most active and helpful members as possible moderators, helping to keep everything running smoothly.

So you’ve just walked in the door after a hard days work, and your child is all over you about this new game he wants to get involved in: it’s Paintball. You immediately start to cringe, but your worries are unfounded. Paintball actually has one of the safest track records among all of the extreme sports. Here I will discuss some of the negative issues surrounding the sport and facts that support its safety. Moreover, I will talk about the benefits paintball has to offer, as well as the many safety features in place to ensure player’s enjoyment and parents overall peace of mind. Paintball Is Safer Than You Think
Paintball is the safest extreme sport in the world, and is safer then almost all pro sports out there today. Let’s take a closer look at these statistics taken from insurance and medical companies to give you peace of mind. For every 1000 players, 0.28 % of these players get injured. Compare that to…
0.7 % for Bowling
1.15 % for Golf
3.68 % for Skiing
27.51 % for Football
27.66 % for Baseball
Quick Facts
12 million people play paintball worldwide
Paintball is played in over 80 countries
People between the ages 12-22 years old account for 96% of paintball players
Paintball is the 3rd most popular extreme sport in the world
Paintball is statistically safer then Baseball, Football and Hockey
Negative Publicity
You may have heard of random acts of vandalism that occur to public property with paintball markers. While this may happen occasionally, it is very rare, and there is usually a very small group of people responsible. As a result of this, the paintball community receives negative publicity and the integrity of paintball players and the sport is called into question. Another big issue surrounding the sport of paintball is fear of injury to the eye or face. A potential eye injury is a huge concern among parents but what they fail to realize is the preventable causes behind the injury, which are usually…
Limited or no supervision
Non-regulation paintball field
Improper paintball mask/equipment (ski goggles are not regulation paintball masks)
Intentional disregard for safety
If you ensure proper standards are met regarding these issues, an eye injury becomes a highly unlikely danger. Benefits of Paintball for Your Child
Promotes individualism and character growth
Friendship, bonding, and sportsmanship
Exercise and stress management
Decision making under pressure, boosts self-esteem and confidence
Strength, agility, and improvement of hand eye coordination
Growth in leadership qualities as a result of teamwork and experience
Paintball also teaches respect, discipline, and how to be responsible for ones actions
Communication, hard work, and common goals are learned and practiced
Safety Features, Equipment, and You
Parents and guardians please do not overlook the importance of the paintball mask; it is the most crucial piece of equipment in your child’s arsenal. A paintball masks’ sole role is to protect the eyes and face from any permanent damage, so that should be reason enough not to skimp on this.
Paintball masks these days are revolutionary; they have very strong and highly advanced lenses that protect the eyes and face. Paintball masks are meant to withstand the force of a paintball traveling at 200 mph and these standards are regulated by the ASTM (The American Society for Testing and Materials).
These are some things you and your child should do before deciding on a paintball mask…
Make sure the mask fits comfortably for obvious reasons
A mask with a larger lens has better peripheral vision capabilities
Be certain the mask has anti-fogging technology
Wear as many masks as possible before any final decision
To reiterate; the paintball mask is the #1 piece of equipment you will ever buy your child. Please do not be cheap about this as it will save your child from any harm, and will give you peace of mind in return. Paintball masks range from as low as $15 dollars and upwards of $110 dollars. JT USA, Empire, and Dye are just a few quality companies that produce paintball masks - and as the saying goes “you get what you pay for”.
The most common injuries related to the paintball scene are sprained ankles, bruised knees and minor cuts and scrapes. That’s why it is imperative your child have the proper footwear and protective gear. A pair of hiking boots or high top runners will support the ankles, and add extra protection to the rest of the feet.
Other important pieces of protective gear to have are knee and elbow pads, this is because your child will be kneeling, crawling and diving behind bunkers, all a part of the fun, but limbs can get pretty roughed up without protection. Moreover a good protective vest and pair of pants to absorb the impact of paintballs can help your child feel more comfortable and confident on the field.
One of the biggest concerns among parents today is the accidental discharge of paintballs from a marker. A couple of safety devices that eliminate this are a barrel sock and a safety trigger. A barrel sock’s primary function is to catch paintballs that are fired from the marker by accident (it acts like a cork in a wine bottle). Barrel socks are normally used in the staging area or anytime players aren’t wearing their masks.. A second device commonly known as the safety trigger disables the use of the trigger when the gun’s not in use. When used responsibly these two safety features serve their purpose and keep everyone safe.
I’m sure by now you are convinced in the fact that paintball is safe and even beneficial for your child. As a parent you should be involved and proactive with paintball safety guidelines and practices. If you can follow the steps given to you here, your child will be safe, and have a great time playing paintball. But the #1 benefit from paintball has got to be the bond you and your child will share. I know that when I take my son out to the paintball field, the connection we have is priceless and I wouldn’t exchange it for anything. That being said, what are you waiting for? Get outside and try it for yourself because you won’t regret it! About The Author
